Piece of Lodge History Comes Home
Tuesday, 08 June 2010 00:00
model_w_dolls_webAt the May ordeal held at Camp Brinkley the lodge unveiled a small piece of lodge history that we have acquired over the past several months. Since 1968 the Museum of History and Industry (MOHAI), located in Seattle Washington, has been the custodian of the exact 1/10 scale replica Longhouse that we have displayed at several lodge events since 2007. This past spring MOHAI has officially deaccessioned the piece along with several miniature totem poles and replica dolls that go with the model that haven't been seen by the lodge members since '68.

The Chief Seattle Council took possession of the new lodge artifacts on May 6th. The exciting new items include miniatures of the Sunyakwa, Yakala and Kis'Kis totem poles, and several clay dolls that depict dancers, singers, and speakers all with replica blankets, hats and masks.

The longhouse model was originally constructed in 1965 by Jim Johnson to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the OA. The model was the lodge's center piece at a NOAC display that year. The figures and all the blankets were made by Mr. Johnson's wife. The artistry of the entire diorama is amazing. You can see the model first hand at the Spring Fellowship at Camp Pigott June 18th - 19th.

This marks the culmination of 20 years of effort to procure the model for the Lodge. We would like to thank first Betsy Bruemmer the Collections Manager at MOHAI for her understanding and efforts. Special thanks to Jim Johnson, who is no longer with us, and the Johnson Family who sent us on this gracious errand back in 1990. A big thank you goes to lodge members Joyce J and John V who for years searched for the lost items and never gave up. Thank you to Carol Payne who lovingly kept and stored the building since 1982. Thank you also to lodge members Matthew K, Joel D, and Jason S who assisted at critical moments of the project.

The longhouse model, once refurbished will be permanently housed in the new longhouse at Camp Pigott.
